Nossa Senhora da Estrela Church

This Mother church was sanctified in 1517 and dedicated to the Purification of the Holy Virgin.

In the interior consisting of three naves, the Chapel of the Three Kings and the Chapel of Santíssimo are outstanding, one with beautiful paintings
and the other with valuable carvings.

The sacristy exposes a 16th century Flemish triptych of painting on wood.

In the 19th century, Sister Clarissa Margarida produced a piece of art that lasted until today.

Kept in the upper choir, this piece of art known as the “Arcano”, is a display of hundreds of tiny figures, moulded from bread crumbs, gum Arabic
and albumen, set at various levels and representing scenes from the Old and New Testament.

Monastery and Church of São Francisco

This church, of a baroque architecture, dates to the 17th century. The chronicler Frei Agostinho de Mont’Alverne lived here in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The building has reliquaries and statues dating of the same period.

Igreja do Espírito Santo
The most influent expression of the barroc style in the Azores. 

Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church
This 18th century building’s chancel has impressive carved relief.

City Hall
The City Hall’s building was built during the 16th and 17th centuries. It is an example of the civil Azorean architecture.

On the exterior, the building has a 16th century Manueline window and in the interior it exposes a collection of portraits of the Chiefs of State from the days of D. Maria to the present.

This 18th century building’s chancel has impressive carved relief.

São Pedro Church
This is a parish church, located in Ribeira Seca parish, built in the 16th century and restored in the 18th century. It houses a valuable 16th century statue of its patron saint.

This church is linked to the traditional “ Cavalhadas de São Pedro”, an unusual medieval pageant, which takes place every year on the 29th of June.

Ethnographic Museum
This museum has local ethnographic art, mainly those made with basalt stone of the region.
