Carlos Machado Museum
In 1912 the importance of the museum was increased with the inauguration of the regional art and ethnography exposition. With the acquisition of the old Santo André Monastery, the museum moved its treasures into this magnificent example of monastic architecture.
The museum also has collections of paintings, sculpture, jewellery, porcelain, toys and ethnography. Biblioteca Pública e Arquivo de Ponta Delgada Public Library and Archives of Ponta Delgada This public library and archives is considered to be one of the most important in the country for the wealth and diversity of the endowments and collections in its possession. Amongst these, the endowments of José do Canto, Ernesto do Canto, Eugénio do Canto, the library and the assets of Teófilo Braga, the library of Antero de Quental and the memorabilia of Dr. José Bruno Carreiro are of great interest. The museum houses five incunabula and book collections dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, some of which came from convents, first editions and other valuable editions.
