Carlos Machado Museum

Founded in 1876 by Dr. Carlos Maria Gomes Machado, with the name “Museum of the Azores”, it opened its doors to the public on the 10th of June of 1880, in the then high school of Ponta Delgada, with Natural History collections of zoology, botany, geology and mineralogy.

In 1912 the importance of the museum was increased with the inauguration of the regional art and ethnography exposition.

With the acquisition of the old Santo André Monastery, the museum moved its treasures into this magnificent example of monastic architecture.

The museum also has collections of paintings, sculpture, jewellery, porcelain, toys and ethnography.
