 "Environmentaly in good shape”, the azores archipelago islands were chosen from the Nationa Geografic Traveler Magazine as the secound world best destination for tourism.
Under the nomiation of Best Rated Islands, the article pubished in November/December edition of National Geografic Traveler Magazine had as base a study carried along by 522 experts, in sustainable tourism and that analized 111 destinies, among archipelagos and single islands. The study seached to find the balance between sustainable tourism, nature and local populations, and on another side the exagerated tourism pressure. On a 100 percent scale the azores had a excelent score of 84, only left behind by the Faroe Islands in Denmark, and ahead of the Lofoten archipelago in Norwege, the shetland islands in Scotland and the Archipelago of Chiloe in Chile. The Archipelago of the Azores was described as a "wonder place and environmentally in good shape", besides having "a eco sistem in great shape were whales still are a common sight".

The Ibiza islands in Spain and St. Thomas Islands in USA had the worst score of all with just 37 Points. |
