Geothermal energy has been a bet of São Miguel Island.

Are installed on the São Miguel Island two plants of the Ribeira Grande geothermal field: Ribeira Grande Geothermal  Plant, with an output of 13MW (1994), and Pico Vermelho Geothermal Plant, with a production capacity of 10MW (2006) , whose combined production contributed, in 2008, with about 40% in the structure of electric production of the Island.

The plants in operation belong to Sogeo, a company mostly owned by the Electricity of the Azores (EDA), whose activity is centered in the exploitation of geothermal resources for the production of electricity on the São Miguel Island.
